Pros

Sethian is highly enthusiastic, an above-average lecturer, and a very empathetic professor. He is responsive to student concerns, to the extent that he asks students what he can do better (or what he can do for the class) in order to help them learn. His exams are challenging, but fair (except for the final exam, which I contest was highly confusing). He engages the class multiple times during lecture, is entertaining, and often funny and witty.

Cons

Final exam for Math 53 when I took it was ridiculously confusing. I had an A going into the final and came out with a C in the class. Lectures are sometimes confusing, and outside study/help is needed in order to fully understand what is going on. Regardless, Sethian does a generally good job of teaching the material, and I consider this class one of the most worthwhile ones I've taken at Berkeley. Its applications are far-reaching and numerous in many different fields.

Pros

Great lecturer, clear, concise, rarely wastes time. Genuinely cares about the success of students, constantly encourages students to speak up and ask questions, get clarification, etc. Assigns a pretty large homework load but there's a reason for every problem. A lot of his exam questions are straight out of the book but aren't assigned in homework. Very fair exams and grading in general

Cons

A bit eccentric/TOO enthusiastic. Moved an exam to the same date as physics 7a and 7b exams knowingly. Uses the students during lecture (e.g. as vectors, or a student's jacket as a surface, etc) a little too much...
