MCN 394 Topic: Sociology Of Media
Pros
Dr. Weight is very knowledgeable on the topics of social theories and how they apply to contemporary media. He is also very understanding and flexible if you maintain communication and are an active class participant.
Cons
There is a lot of work in this course. I took this class as an elective, but had I known how much work would be involved, I definitely would have reconsidered. The text is very dense, dry and difficult to get through which makes the weekly readings from the text very difficult. He also posts learning units online which are generally about 10 pages, but supplemented by multiple other online readings which can take hours and hours to get through. Once the readings are complete, you must participate in the discussion on the discussion board, and oftentimes, the questions are very difficult to respond to. You are also expected to respond and interact with other students regarding their opinions of the readings and how they apply to the topic. There are multiple papers that must be written, anywhere from 10-20 pages (Yikes!). There is also a large group paper, which was a complete disaster to organize. Unless you have tons of time to dedicate to reading and a strong desire to write papers on difficult topics, I would not recommend taking this class.
